Literacy at Educational Diversity 

Literacy is a key whole-school priority at Educational Diversity. 

We recognise that strong skills in reading, writing, vocabulary and oracy are essential for pupils to access the curriculum, communicate effectively and prepare successfully for their next stage. 

Our Literacy Strategy 2026–2028 sets out our work to develop a more consistent, whole-school approach to literacy across Educational Diversity. The strategy builds on existing strengths while addressing areas where practice is still developing.  

We are working to strengthen: 

  • the teaching of reading, comprehension and vocabulary across the curriculum 

  • the quality and quantity of writing 

  • pupils’ confidence in speaking and discussion 

  • the use of assessment to identify literacy needs and inform teaching 

  • targeted literacy support for pupils who need additional help 

  • a stronger culture of reading across the school. 

Read Write Inc, including Fresh Start, is used to support pupils who need help with phonics and decoding, and we are working to embed this more consistently across the relevant parts of the school.  

For older pupils, we are developing a more consistent approach to reading comprehension, vocabulary and disciplinary literacy. The Day is used within form-time to support reading, discussion, vocabulary and engagement with current issues.  

Over the course of the strategy, we are also developing a clearer tiered model of literacy intervention, supported by improved assessment, staff training and closer monitoring of pupil progress.  

Our aim is to ensure that literacy becomes increasingly consistent across subjects, key stages and provisions and that every pupil is supported to make meaningful progress from their individual starting point.
