Pegasus is our KS2 / KS3 provision catering for young people between ages 6 and 14. These young people have moved onto our roll from their mainstream school, invariably as a result of either a managed move or a permanent exclusion. For a variety of reasons, mainstream colleagues have been unable to meet their individual needs. We provide access to an extensive curriculum within an environment where students are encouraged to make positive behaviour change and realise their potential. We have found that often these young people although they present with some negative behaviours, this is used to mask an unmet need such as speech, language and communication difficulties (SLCN). Each young person, as appropriate on induction is screened for SLCN and following this assessment we are able to offer some therapeutic tailored support from speech and language specialists.
These two key stages have recently joined together in a through provision where we are hoping to develop a "stage not age" approach. We are developing a thematic approach to learning within a primary model where students in the main, remain in their class groups. We have enriched the curriculum in a number of ways and have embraced pilot programmes within "Headstart", such as Video Interactive Guidance (VIG), Equine Studies and Adaptive Resilience. The impact of these initiatives is currently being reviewed and we hope to cascade some of these ideas into other Centres.
The team of staff at Pegasus pride themselves on the wrap around pastoral support they provide and we will constantly review our approaches with individuals until together, we are able to unlock their potential.
